Bottle Baby Calves by Waitlist

Each spring we make one trip to a dairy in Tillamook County, Oregon where we purchase all of their available A2A2 Jersey calves. They send in DNA samples when the calves are born, and typically get results back on Tuesday when the calves are four weeks old. The dairy then reviews their DNA profiles and selects the calves they want to keep. They typically notify me on Wednesday how many calves they have available. I review the available calves and select the ones I want to keep.

The rest of the calves I sell to cover the cost of my trip and offer them first to the people on the waitlist. Starting at the top of the list, I then work may way down meeting the request of each buyer on the list based on their preferences. Not everyone will get their request met perfectly and there is no obligation to buy. It is also very possible that the dairy will not have enough calves to have one for every person on the list.

All Jersey calves are DNA verified to be A2A2. They have all been disbudded but occasionally we get a polled calf. Prices change each year. For 2026, prices were:

  • 4 weeks old: $1,250 on the bottle
  • 5 weeks old: $1,325 on the bottle
  • 6 weeks old: $1,400 on the bottle
  • 7 weeks old: $1,475 on the bottle
  • 8 weeks old: $1,550 on the bottle
  • 11 weeks old: $1,700 weaned, vaccinated

Beef-Jersey cross calves are not always available when I pick up the Jersey calves from the dairy each spring. In 2025, they bred back to Speckled Park and Angus. In 2026, they bred back to Charolais. I am not sure what they are breeding back to in 2027, but the dairy was happy with the Charolais cross.

Unlike the Jersey calves, the beef-crosses are NOT DNA tested for beta casein status (A1 vs A2). They do not have ear tags, are not registered, and do not come with any sort of pedigree. In the past, they have been bred to naturally polled breeds.

Pricing has gone up based on demand. They have a buyer who comes daily to the the dairy and buys all the beef-cross calves (hundreds over calving season). They turn away individual buyers because they have sufficient demand from bulk buyers (such as myself). Pricing has been:

  • 2025 $950 each
  • 2026 $1,350 each
  • 2027 TBD – the dairy has informed me the price will go up

The calves are sold at a couple of days to under one week old. Being younger, they are much more susceptible to stress and illness from traveling. They are much more prone to scouring. For this reason, all beef-cross calves MUST be picked up from us along our route on our return trip home. They may NOT be picked up the following day. The additional time in transit increases their stress and risk of scouring. The beef-cross calves do require a 50% deposit before I pick up the calves and is not refundable if the buyer misses picking them up along my route home.

Adeline is a super sweet girl, gentle, and pet-like. She has not been trained to a halter but follows us around like our shadow. She will be put in with our purebred mini Hereford bull the mid-June for anticipated calving late March to April 2027. I recommend leaving her with the bull for 45 days and picking her up the end of August or beginning of September. She will be a springer heifer (first time mom bred to calve in the spring).
